How to photograph a car for sale

Prepare the car and clean the lens

Wash the car if needed, let it dry and remove loose belongings from the areas you will photograph. Close the doors, bonnet and boot for the exterior walk-around. Present the car as it is: cleaning is useful, but damage and wear should remain visible. Set aside time to photograph those details separately for the listing.

Wipe the phone's camera lens with a clean, soft cloth. Fingerprints can soften the image or make bright areas look hazy. Use the rear camera and check a trial photo before starting the full sequence. Keep the original files so you can return to them when assembling your advert.

Choose even light and a safe place

An overcast day is a useful starting point because the light is more even across the car. If the sun is bright, try a time or position that avoids harsh midday light and deep shadows. Look at the paint and windows on your screen: strong reflections can obscure the shape or condition even when the photo is sharp.

Choose a safe place with room to walk around and step back. Avoid traffic, people crossing behind the car and other vehicles crowding the frame. Check the light again as you move to the opposite side. If one angle is washed out or too dark, reposition the car safely or wait for softer light rather than applying a strong filter.

Frame the whole car at a consistent height

Hold the phone near headlight or door-handle height and keep it level. Step back until the whole vehicle fits, including wheels, mirrors and bumpers. Leave some space above, below and at both ends; a tight crop gives background replacement less room to work. There is no fixed distance for every vehicle: use the frame to judge where to stand.

Use a normal camera view and move your feet instead of using digital zoom. Avoid an extreme wide-angle view or getting very close to one corner, which can make the nearest part dominate the photo. Keep a similar height and distance as you walk around so the set feels consistent. Check that only one car is the subject in each image.

Follow a repeatable exterior shot list

Start at one front corner and follow the same order around the car. This helps you notice missing views and makes it easier to compare the photos afterwards. At each position, pause, check the edges and hold the phone steady before taking the picture. Use these views as a practical starting sequence, not a required listing-photo count.

1. Front three-quarter: show the front and one side, keeping the far end and both visible wheels in frame.
2. Side: face the side of the car and include its full length, roof and wheels.
3. Rear three-quarter: show the rear and the same side, with room around the bumper and mirrors.
4. Opposite side: walk around and photograph the other side in full, using a similar camera height.
5. Straight front, if wanted: centre the camera on the car and include the whole exterior.
6. Straight rear, if wanted: use a level, centred view with the whole car inside the frame.

Review the photos before leaving

Open each image and check sharpness, especially around the car's edges and wheels. Retake pictures with heavy blur, clipped bodywork or distracting reflections while the car is still in position. Keep the clearer version of repeated shots rather than uploading near-identical alternatives without reviewing them. Check the opposite side as carefully as the first one.

Avoid portrait mode, strong filters, digital zoom and photos with several competing cars. Do not use editing to hide scratches, dents or other condition details. Keep listing details separate from background replacement
